Insomnia

According to Ayurveda, insomnia is a vata problem or imbalance, and to bring on sound, peaceful sleep, the overactive vata must be calmed. If you suffer from restless, sleepless nights, Ayurvedic practitioners may suggest trying(Ayurvedic Treatment) one or more of the following remedies:

  • Drink warm milk before retiring.
  • Apply coconut oil, sesame oil, or mustard oil to your head and feet to calm your nervous system.
  • Take a warm (not hot) bath or shower to help you relax.

Bodywork and Somatic Practices

Massage is always a great relaxing therapy. CranioSacral Therapy/Somato Emotional Release, reflexology, Trager, polarity therapy and Oriental bodywork, can also induce sleep.

Herbal Therapy

Of all the herbal remedies for insomnia, valerian (a central nervous system depressant) is probably the best known and most effective. To make a cup of valerian tea, steep 2 teaspoons chopped root in 1 cup boiling water for 15 minutes; strain. Drink half an hour before bedtime. You can also take 20 drops valerian tincture in water at bedtime. Use occasionally, not nightly.

St. John’s wort tea has also been used to treat insomnia. An infusion of 1 teaspoon of dried St. John’s wort (3 teaspoons fresh) to each 8 ounce cup of boiling water is used. The tea should be steeped for 15 minutes before drinking.

Chamomile tea is another highly effective sleep aid. Steep 2 teaspoons chopped flowers in 1 cup boiling water for 10 minutes; strain. Drink half an hour before bedtime. Do not drink chamomile tea if you’re allergic to ragweed.

Other teas that have a calming effect include lime blossom, passion flower, hops, and skullcap. To make one of these teas, steep 1 teaspoon dried herb in 1 cup boiling water for 10 minutes; strain. You also can find blends of these herbs in teas, tinctures, and capsules in most health food stores. Follow the directions on the package label.
